The third round of severe weather for Texas will hit today, this time centering on central Texas for damaging large hail and tornadoes. I overlaid the rotation tracks with my severe weather area so you can see where the greatest severe potential will occur.
Yesterday there were 20 reports of tornadoes with 5 of them reported across western Texas near Lubbock. Most of the tornado reports were from only 2-4 supercells that produce a family of tornadoes or the same tornado seen from different storm spotters, so most likely the number was much lower. We continue to see a low number of tornadoes this year with the number of tornadoes below the 25th percentile. I don’t see any major tornado outbreaks coming in the near future so that number will remain low through the end of May.
