🌊 OCTOBER'S EAST COAST STORMS: A WINTER TO REMEMBER?

It's Friday, and today we're looking ahead to the weather pattern developing during October — because some of the changes we're beginning to see could offer important clues about the upcoming winter.

One thing catching my attention is the development of storms along the East Coast.

These systems could become the early signs of a pattern we're expecting to see more frequently during the winter months: East Coast storms that, when the right cold air is in place, can produce heavy snow and powerful nor'easters.

🌪️ WATCHING THE EASTERN SEABOARD

Over the next 30 to 60 days, we need to pay close attention to what's happening along the Eastern Seaboard.

Why?

Because the evolution of these coastal storms could provide clues about how the winter storm track develops.

The storms we're watching now won't necessarily produce snow, but their location, frequency and overall behavior could help us understand whether the atmosphere is beginning to establish the pattern we're anticipating for winter.

And as we move deeper into the cold season, that pattern could become even more active.

❄️ THE SOUTHERN JET AND EL NIÑO

As we head toward winter, we're expecting the southern jet stream and El Niño influence to become increasingly important.

A stronger southern jet can transport additional moisture across the southern United States and interact with colder air farther north. If the jet buckles into the eastern part of the country, it could help create an environment favorable for significant East Coast storms.

That is where the potential for heavy snow and nor'easters comes into the discussion.

But there are still plenty of moving parts.

Remember, we're dealing with a negative PDO alongside a strong El Niño, which is not the typical combination we've seen during previous super El Niño events.

Those two features don't always work together in a straightforward way, and that could lead to some interesting twists and turns in the weather pattern this winter.

🧊 THE AO AND PNA WILL MATTER

We also need to keep a close eye on the Arctic Oscillation (AO) and the Pacific-North American pattern (PNA).

Both could play important roles in determining how cold air is distributed across North America.

The AO can influence whether Arctic air remains bottled up in the north or is able to surge southward. Meanwhile, the PNA can affect the position of ridges and troughs across the western and eastern parts of the continent.

When these ingredients align with the right storm track and available moisture, we could see some very impressive winter weather events.

Of course, the timing and persistence of these patterns will be critical.

🔎 OCTOBER WILL OFFER IMPORTANT CLUES

So, as we move into October, let's watch what happens along the East Coast.

Are storms becoming more frequent? Are they tracking close to the coastline? Are we seeing the atmospheric setup begin to resemble the pattern we're expecting for winter?

These are the questions we'll be asking over the next several weeks.

The winter pattern won't be determined by one storm or one month alone, but October could provide some valuable clues about what lies ahead.
