Severe Storms for the Mid-Atlantic Thursday

Henry Margusity, Chief Meteorologist

A weak cold front coupled with a strong jet aloft will produce a band of severe storms across the Mid-Atlantic Thursday afternoon and evening. Storms will develop after noon and will move into the Mid-Atlantic region impacting areas like Philly, NYC, DC and Richmond. While the primary threat will be damaging wind gusts, a few isolated tornadoes may occur. The jet aloft will have the right front quadrant over the Mid-Atlantic which is the quadrant for upward motion. At over 100kts, that will produce strong upward motion. In addition, shear will will be strong so that’s why the tornado threat will exist.
