❄️ THE FIRST SNOWS OF THE SEASON ARE SHOWING UP!
Well, we're getting to that time of year again, and I'm starting to see something that always gets my attention:
Snow!
We could be looking at the first significant snows of the season across the Northern Rockies and Canadian Rockies later this weekend into early next week.
A surge of colder air is going to push southward into the High Plains, and at the same time, we'll have a storm system moving through the region. Put those two ingredients together, and we're going to have to start watching for accumulating snow.
🏔️ NORTHERN ROCKIES COULD SEE SOME SNOW
Some of the higher elevations across the Northern Rockies could pick up several inches of snow, with the potential for locally heavier amounts.
Places around Yellowstone National Park could see significant snowfall, particularly at the higher elevations. Some locations could potentially approach 8 inches of snow.
And this won't be confined to the United States.
The Canadian Rockies could also see their first significant snowfall of the season, with accumulating snow possible across the higher terrain.
Even Calgary could potentially see around 4 to 5 inches during the overall event, depending on how the storm system and colder air come together.
And I wouldn't be surprised if some snow tries to sneak southward into Wyoming as well.
🍂 SEPTEMBER SNOW? ABSOLUTELY!
Now, before everybody starts getting excited and thinking winter is arriving early, let's put this into perspective.
Snow in the Northern Rockies during September is not unusual.
The higher elevations can see their first snow of the season relatively early, and once you get into September, we're entering the time of year when the mountains can start seeing some significant winter-like weather.
But there's something special about seeing those first snow maps of the season.
The first snow is always exciting!
It's that first reminder that the seasons are changing and that eventually we're going to be talking about snow across much larger portions of the country.
❄️ THE SEASONAL TRANSITION IS UNDERWAY
We've been talking about the transition from summer to fall, and this is another sign that it's happening.
We're going to see colder air pushing into the High Plains.
We're going to have storm systems moving through the northern tier.
And now we're starting to see accumulating snow showing up in the forecast for the mountains.
We're obviously a long way from widespread winter weather, but this is the beginning.
The mountains get their snow first.
Then, as the season progresses, we'll start watching that cold air push farther south and east.
So for now, if you're heading into Yellowstone, the Northern Rockies, or the Canadian Rockies later this weekend or early next week, keep an eye on the weather.
You might just get to see the first snow of the season.
