Around April 27, 1984 western South Dakota got hammered by a massive snow storm. We had arrived at Ellsworth AFB near Rapid City in June 83 and were warned about winters. I remember using pliers to pull the studs from my tires in mid April (I was a young Airman and didn’t have regular tires). The storm hit so hard power was out in base housing and we had to light the stove for warmth. It lasted 3 days and as I recall we got over 30 inches in less than 36 hours. When the plows finally came out they ran a fire lane down the middle of the roads and we had to walk to the end of the street for a bus to take us to the commissary to get food. Man, those were the days!
