NOW my local 10 day forecast trending towards a snow event (60%) for some areas of LI; still relatively marginal, with borderline temps predicted but , nothing yesterday, not even rain in the local forecast, so I am hopeful… We shall see…
Three days of low clouds and fog with no wind on Long Island; my small pond is all liquid and pond fish that usually stopped feeding late October a few years ago still feeding; had a lethargic bull frog out in the open several days ago. Yup, just anecdotal local observations, but the USDA just officially changed my local Plant Hardiness zone to…Read More
Above freezing now and for next few days at least and RAIN in Lake Placid, NY .. When it rains fairly consistently in December in northern NYS, little chance for winter to make a show with snow in most of NYS and southern New England any time soon, except for isolated lake effect snow events western NYS.
(Bloomberg) — “Unusually mild weather will linger across the northern US for the rest of the winter, while drought will creep into the Midwest over the next three months, government forecasters said Thursday.”
Anyone’s guess at this point
Key wording is government forecasters…so probably wide spread polar temperatures and heavy snowstorms one after another…lol
32 here am , NE Long Island, NY..” Its been a long time coming, but I know a change is gonna come..” ( Sam Cooke, 1964) All is well.
WOW…yes the winter is not cooperating, indices are not reliable (personally I still think we are in a new cycle of changing weather conditions and need to re-set predictive models based on new data) and, generally Spring has Sprung in the NE again and probably a no go for much snow like the last two winters more or less. I miss winter but we…Read More
Visited Manhattan, NYC today- a bright warm sunny day, lots of folks, beautiful tree -but a bit surreal… seemed more like October not middle of December-if you can’t beat the warmth enjoy the warmth… Local 10 day forecast more of the same.. actually ‘more of the same’ since last winter 🙁
Actual low temps here in my corner of NE Nassau County NY have been consistently lower than the local forecasted lows… so… maybe wet storms will turn into white storms…Wishing all Peace and a snowy Holiday Surprise before the New Year…
The 900 pound gorilla… nothing to see here…
By the looks of the 12z Dec 12-28 map , the low is again too far WEST for anything resembling a reasonable cold storm east of I-95; as I opined last year the long range weather indices we have been relying on in the past are no longer valid due to ..Climate Change-not because of MAN- but the natural cycle of warming due to many factors including…Read More
55 degrees now in NE Nassau County LI… heavy almost tropical-like on and off wind and rain; RAINING in Lake Placid, NY….’A Hard Rain’s (NOT) Gonna Fall…’ any time soon here; too warm (apologies to Bob Dylan):-(
Local long-range weather prognosticators STILL going for a generally warm wet winter here on Long Island- BUT I have faith in you Henry; got my generator and snow blower ready for wind, rain, ice, and…SNOW.. bring it on!
I guess an anecdotal report or two on what’s going on may be as accurate a predictor of the winter weather as the current hard data…I am continuing to feed my pond fish in December 2023; 15 years ago they stopped eating in early October when the water temp fell below 39 degrees; Many outdoor plants, usually done and gone by November 1st, are…Read More
And now it appears that “… the times (and the climate) they are a-changing…”. The reasons and causes really don’t matter at this point when we may be on the cusp of another lack-luster, uneventful Winter season in the North East; ” you don’t need a weatherman to say which way the wind blows” at this point; with apologies to Mr. Bob Dylan…Read More
based off of what factors?
My personal experience, anecdotal but real. In the 60’s and 70’s we had sleds with metal runners that required hard packed show and ice-no problem on the hills of Queens and Long Island. Even in Central Park, generally at least 5 degrees warmer than northern Northern Long Island in the winter, the sledding was almost guaranteed the majority of…Read More
25 degrees in my corner of NE Nassau County, Long Island this AM; That’s almost 10 degrees colder than the predicted local forecasted low. That’s very good news! In the past, when the actual low temperatures here were several degrees lower than the predicted low on a regular basis, especially this early in the season, there was a reasonable…Read More
When this happens, it's usually because the owner only shared it with a small group of people, change who can see it or it's been deleted.
The last decade or so’s weather will be the ‘good old days’ of winter for our kids and grandkids; hopefully there are a few good old Nor’easters in their future.
So…no worries or Deja vu all over again? I do not agree with the hysterical ” climate change is caused by mankind!” rant; however I also acknowledge that the Earth’s ‘climate’ has changed dramatically in the relatively recent past and continues to change. It’s a dynamic and, to some extent, predictable naturel cycle. So yes, the ‘climate ‘…Read More
69 degrees here , NE Nassau County, Long Island, NY; need to feed my very active goldfish , who are usually under the pond ice this time of year in my small backyard pond. Concerned if big freeze, even ‘average’ February temps return, the bullfrogs, who also are emerging due to unseasonable warmth, will freeze. I miss the snow but Spring is in…Read More
