Snow Streaks East through Saturday Morning A storm moving quickly across the country will bring snow light to moderate snow from the central Plains into the Mid-Atlantic through Saturday morning. The snow will accumulate a coating to 4 inches in general but a little heavier swath of 5-6 inches of snow will impact the West Virginia mountains and may go through northern Virginia into The Delmarva. St. Louis and Indianapolis to Cincinnati will see snow today but most paved surfaces will be wet because the snow is coming during the day. The problem spot will be in the Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic where the snow comes tonight and that snow may accumulate on roads. Washington and Baltimore could see up to 5 inches of snow while Philadelphia and New York City will see 1-3 inches of snow. 2-3 inches of snow will impact Pennsylvania back into eastern Ohio. The snow will be over by Midday Saturday, but windy and cold weather with snow showers and additional coatings of snow will follow in the Appalachians.
Updated Monday: Major Snowstorm Starts a Very Active Winter Pattern Monday AM – I made changes to the map based on the surface map which shows the extent of the cold air farther south this morning. Also overnight, the models slipped a little more south with the snow in the Appalachians and New England plus the surface temps a slightly warmer which means a lower snow ratio. So changes to the map was done based on the new models and surface map. Sunday AM: There has been a slight shift in the snow area the last 24 hours but the overall amount of snow has not changed very much. It still appears that a skinny swath of rain to heavy wet snow will come out of Oklahoma and head into the Ohio Valley Monday into Monday night. Heavy snow breaks out across central Pennsylvania Tuesday morning and heads into New England by Midday. Snow rates will will be 1-2 inches per hour with snow ratios of 8:1. The major storm is over the West this morning and will begin to spread snow into Colorado this weekend. Snow will spread south into Texas and Oklahoma Sunday then turn to the Northeast heading up through Missouri into Ohio by Monday night. A swath of 1-6 inches of snow will occur with the storm from Colorado into Ohio. The storm is going to jump the Appalachians and show reform off Maryland. While the models continue to show a wide range of solutions, but the trend has been for the snows to shift south. New York City and Philadelphia will not escape the snow, it’s just a matter of how much snow will fall. The problem spots are Boston, Baltimore and Washington because any shift in the snow area will bring either no snow north of rain south. In the heaviest snow area, 8-16 inches will occur which will cause major travel problems.
Thaw Breaks with More Snow The thaw weather will only last into Saturday before the a a storm comes along and brings a change to colder weather and snow for Sunday into Monday. The storm will bring rain that will change over to a heavy wet snow from the Ohio Valley into the Appalachians and New England. The heaviest snows of 4″+ will go from the Ohio through northern PA and southern NY into New England. There is the chance the heavier snows develop into southern PA, MD and northern VA as the upper-level low comes over that area Sunday night. Roads will go from wet to slushy and slippery and in the heavier snow area, compacted snow on the roads.
