The Pattern is Showing the Snowing!
Short Range: Snow is falling across northern Iowa into southern Wisconsin this morning. Up to 6 inches has fallen already in parts of Iowa. That snow will move into southwest Michigan and parts of northern Ohio and dwindle out.
Another area of snow will develop across the Great Lakes Saturday and that area of snow will cascade across Ontario into PA, NY, northern NJ and New England Sunday. NYC will be very close to getting 1-3 inches of snow. Most areas will see 1-4 inches of snow with a swath fo 4+ across south-central NY Sunday.
Some snow might try to come through Maine on Monday as a secondary low develops.
Long Range: In the long range, I am going to cover the western storm that will become the blizzard in the Plains Tuesday. That storm will come through the West with very heavy snow over the Sierra’s and through the Intermountain region. California will see heavy rains and the potential for some flooding and perhaps even severe storms. Once the storm moves out of the Rockies and into the Plains, it will intensify and become a blizzard for the Dakotas into Minnesota.
The pattern gets interesting as the PNA will go more positive while the AO and NAO stay negative. This will lead to the potential for a coastal storm to develop late next week. Cold air will certainly be dammed up against the front range of the Appalachians that will lead to mix and heavy snows. The GFS has heavy snow from Virginia into New England which is certainly possible in this pattern.
The weather gets even more exciting from the 18th through the end of the month as the southern Branch of the jet becomes stormy and plenty of cold air is around for swaths of heavy snow deep into the southern Plains into the Northeast.
