4 below here in eastern Tioga County NY at 8:15 this morning, all the way up to +2 now. Heat wave.
We’re at 843′ elevation in the valley west of Binghamton. Seems to be going back and forth on snow, it was whitening my yard a bit earlier but more rain has mixed in at this time. Felt kind of early in the storm to have it snow like that at my altitude.
Did you get to see the aurora last night, Henry? It was spectacular. Also 30 degrees here in eastern Tioga County NY at 7:25 AM today, so we skipped over frost and went directly to freeze.
Are these “weather person in training” emails I’m receiving associated with this site? I tried to mark them as spam but WeatherMadness emails then ended up in spam. I am not interested in receiving additional emails from unknown parties. If these are linked I will have to decide if I want to stop receiving your emails as well, though I wouldn’t be…Read More
They are valid..he is working with Henry
Binghamton NOAA office has part of the track centered right over my area on the Broome/Tioga county NY line. It’s probably PTSD but I’m getting flashbacks to 2011 and I really don’t need the stress. 16″ of rain was measured less than a mile from my home.
We moved to upstate NY in spring 1999 (after the big 1998 outbreak). I’ve never seen anywhere close to this number of tornado-warned storms upstate. It’s pretty alarming, and the main line isn’t even that close to Binghamton yet.
Five degrees at 8 AM here today and as of now it’s already 23. That really light powdery snow is sublimating away quite well at this point.
0.21 inches of liquid equivalent became 5 inches of snow at the Binghamton NWS office today. Henry sure didn’t exaggerate when he said it would be a high-ratio event. It was almost a pleasure shoveling it.
First squall line came through but it was relatively weak and short-lived. Southeast Tioga County NY
Four or so inches here so far. Cleared the driveway; looks like a bit more coming in but it’s better for my health to split the job up.
One bit of consistency in our Tioga County NY winter weather has been the westward creep of the storm tracks by the time storms actually occur. This time we went from borderline advisory to right in the middle of the warnings. The most blatant example being the big dump of snow December 2020.
I find it interesting that my local airport/weather station at Binghamton announced 2023 was the least snowy calendar year since 1952 at about 46″ worth. Also average temperatures were overall about 3.5 degrees above normal. What gets me is “normal” is adjusted every 10 years and itself is creeping up. Weird stuff; also that we got 40″ of snow in…Read More
2-3 inches of rain in my area with lots of minor to moderate river flooding developing. Forecast yesterday had the axis of heavy rain east of here; a postmortem on why this was wrong would be interesting. In any case the initial forecasts were off, to say the least. At least this wasn’t feet of snow, like exactly 3 years ago.
Henry, in your videos your maps are cut off on the tops and on the left sides. It looks like they’ve shifted up and to the left. Can’t see as much of Canada and half the left coast is off screen.
Tioga County NY currently 51 degrees, light rain
Southern Tioga county NY, and we had thunder last night. Hurrah for December!
I find it interesting that the “cold” signal for the continental US that you discuss on the long range is for seasonal average temperatures, whereas there is nothing on that prediction that shows colder than average anywhere for that 3 month period.
It seems to me that the models and I mean all of them can’t “see” the cold until it is right in front of them. If a model is showing “Average” in a large area while also “Above Average” in other areas, in 2023 it is really saying “Below Normal”.
Some graupel yesterday and last night in Tioga/Broome counties in New York. It’s my favorite type of snow, cute little soft snowballs, and a nice way to start the season.
Tioga County NY, smoke smell is somewhat less than yesterday but just now seemed to be getting a bit stronger again. I’ve been in upstate NY most of my life but never seen anything like this. I had to drop the storm windows yesterday to minimize inflow.
yes. noticeable but now awful around 10AM. Much worse now.
Thundersleet here west of Binghamton a little while ago. Pretty impressive amount of lightning/thunder for February and some of the sleet pieces were large.
