Here is another photo I took a couple of hours ago. This large cell was over the Spring Mountains to the northwest.
Convective showers have popped up over the mountains again today, but these are not big rain producers, and most of the precip evaporates on the way to the surface. Currently 99 deg. at my place, while the airport reports 107 and dpt of 56.
Conditions in the Las Vegas Valley have continued dry and hot for the past several days with monsoon storms remaining well east of here and centered in Arizona. We have overcast skies this morning in the Las Vegas Valley, and tough radar shows precip, this is all virga. Nothing is reaching the ground at this time. The temperature is currently 87 at my location while the airport is reporting 93 and dew point of 53 as of 07:30 PDT.
Temperatures have moderated in recent days with highs remaining in the low 100s here at my Spring Valley location. The worst of the smoke has shifted north of here for the time being.

While temps have cooled with the passage of a front, we now have wildfire smoke drifting in from CA and as a result, air quality throughout the region has become very unhealthy. Current AQI is about 200. Current temperature here is 85 at 07:10 PDT with an expected high of 105 which is down from the 110 of yesterday, though my high was only 105 here.
Most of the monsoon moisture has shifted well to the east of southern NV over the past couple of days. It looks like now we have a period of mostly sunny and warm days, though noticeably cooler than recently. Tomorrow it is expected to get up to 104 compared to days in the 110s.
Scattered storms are developing over the mountain ares so far this afternoon. I took this picture of a cell over the western mountains at about 12:30 PDT earlier.
There were some light showers overnight in the Las Vegas Valley, but more convective activity could pop up today. At 07:15 PDT it was 87 deg. Today we got a real gully washer. The storm developed first over the mountains just to the west of here and continued developing out toward the east. As the photo shows, the sky was mostly blue looking toward the east. Pretty impressive desert monsoon storm!
A pretty good sized thunderstorm cell developed well to the south of our location but is mainly staying in place. I got a photo of the large anvil top.
It turned out to be a pleasant evening yesterday as the afternoon convective activity died away. Below is a photo of the last of the clouds and the Moon in the sky.
We just had a brief thunderstorm a bit ago. Temps dropped from 106 to about 97 here. Surface map shows the station report of a thunderstorm.
Henry, you are spot on about the vulcanism as being part of the warming climate situation. The “climate crazies” as you call them don’t look at the larger picture and at other forcings that are at play in the Earth’s climate system. But the climate people want to attribute human caused climate changes as nearly 100% of it. That never made sense to me.
That’s because the climate crazies’ agenda has nothing to do with climate or care for the planet.
Correct. Putting their hysteria aside, we need to do better – plastics in the environment, micro-plastics in our food supply (and in us), and on and on.
I 100% agree. Only about 5% of plastics are recyclable at present. That has to change. All of us have micro-plastics in our bodies now and the seas are full of the stuff.

At 07:10 it is 91 deg in the Las Vegas Valley and dew point of 55 deg. We have had cu developing every day, but no storms over the valley since a couple of days ago. Chances are kept at 20% by NWS forecast office pretty much each day. Another hot week for the area though, with temperatures climbing to 108 deg. today and up to 114 by the weekend.
It’s actually feeling a bit humid here in the Las Vegas Valley this morning. Current temperature is 82 but the dew point is reported as 61 at the airport. Still quite a bit of elevated convective activity so there could be more scattered storms today.
The thunderstorms are gradually dissipating, but we got a little treat with a faint rainbow.
At 18:20 PDT we got a thunderstorm. Moderate rain still falling and temperature dropped from 100 deg to 95.
