The Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) is a key indicator of the strength and phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Sustained strongly positive SOI values (typically 30-day average > +7 or +8) are associated with La Niña conditions, and sustained strongly negative values with…Read More
We need that negative SOI for those juicy southern energies to come a calling for the Mid-Atlantic.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you Weather Madness folks. Currently 61 deg in the Las Vegas Valley area and calm winds. Expected high should be in the upper 60s. I hope to get a good walk in before I head down to my grand niece’s for Thanksgiving dinner. Everyone have a good holiday.
After a string of wet weather last week, sunny and dry weather has returned to the Las Vegas Valley area with mild temperatures. We could be close to 70 deg on Thanksgiving and into the weekend. Low temps have been in the upper 40s for the most part. The last of the Pacific storms that passed through left a good covering of snow on the mountains,…Read More

i like the new snow maps a cleaner look.
More rain showers moved through the Las Vegas Valley early this morning, and now it is mostly cloudy with a temperature of about 50 deg. Last night it got down into the upper 40s. Last evening, the clouds lifted enough to reveal fresh snow on the ridge tops of the Spring Mountains. It is possible more rain could fall later this week as well.
Gosh, I miss the fresh smell that the rain releases from the desert and the shrubs!
From Mount Washington NH: After more than a foot of new snow since Sunday, MWOBS staff were greeted by incredible views of towering snow drifts and thick rime coating the summit this morning. Month-to-date snowfall is now up to 60.4″, bringing us closer to the November record of 86.6″ with 11 days to go!
NAO usually doesn’t take prominence over other indices until the last third of the winter in the east. (Weather BELL Analytics)
We have had a couple of periods of heavy rain in the Las Vegas Valley and it looks like rain has changed to light snow at the Lee Canyon Ski area. Temperature here has dropped to 61 deg.
The Pacific storm system has brought rain to the Las Vegas Valley and moderate rain is falling as of 10:30 PST. We had a little rain in the very early morning hours yesterday as well, but today should be more significant. Temperatures are in the mid 60s and currently is 65 at my location in western Spring Valley/South Summerlin area. Checking the…Read More

Up to a foot of snow on some of the highest peaks (8500+) in yesterday’s storm. Just rain at lake Tahoe level (6250). Sending winter your way to the east!
We have had some beautiful fall weather in the Las Vegas Valley with high temps in the mid to upper 70s to low 80s and low temps in the upper 50s. I will say this though, I won’t miss the cold and snow folks will soon get in the Northeast. My body does not like the cold weather anymore.
Early this morning we had scattered thundershowers move through Southern NV, though since it was quite elevated, very little rainfall reached the ground. By mid-morning, the sun broke through again and now as of 14:20 PDT it is clear and 77 deg.
