New Hurricane Intensity Scale(s) Revision Coming? Article in USA Today indicates the NHC wants to revise Saffir-Simpson or come up with more scales to address hurricane intensity. Excessive rainfall and storm surge need to be part of the warning system, something SS does not cover. JB’s team at WxBell has come up with a Power and Impact scale…Read More

Anywhere south of the mason-dickson line doesn’t do snow.
Snow finally started snowing in the Cape Fear area. We’ve been in the dry slot all day, but it’s closed up now. Likely to snow all night. I suspect accumulation will be in in 4-5 inch range where I am when done. Much more snow north and northeast from here At 2100: Temp 19, wind NW 16, wind chill 4. Barometer 29.79 and falling. This storm appears to be MY storm in NC! Y’all to the west may miss out. Will be interesting to hear from Henry his thoughts on Wednesday night.
So far its a non-event in the Wilmington NC area. Temp hovering just below 32 with intermittent showers. No black in my driveway (yet.) Hope you address next weekend’s storm… is that still in play?

A comment on naming storms … Coastal residents in NC must have a special rider on their home owner’s insurance for “Wind and Hail” – your homeowners insurance doesn’t cover these perils. If a Named storm causes damage your deductible is $10,000; for a non-named storm the deductible is only $2000 (or so.) I had to replace my roof last year…Read More
Not quite a bust for the immediate SE coast. It’s been battering NC and SC for the past 24 hours and is forecast to continue more of the same today. The beaches are taking a beating from relentless NE winds and scouring wave action. The storm center (~ 998 mb) is just offshore of Wilmington and hanging there. Looking at the latest model runs…Read More
Give him a break he is 70 years old. He should be enjoying his grandkids not worrying about the weather.
Rain shield from the nor’easter hit the Cape Fear area (Wilmington) about 0200. Expecting at least 24 hours of rain. Winds this morning are NNE @ 17 w/ gusts to 22.
Time to start watching the tropical wave heading into the MDR below 15N. There’s very little shear in this area providing a gentle path into the Caribbean in about 15 days. For what its worth, the GFS has it in the Carib October 18. Euro nada so far.
Forecast track below puts me in the right semi-circle of Imelda (to be), but I have low confidence in just about all the tracks pending development of an organized central core.
